2024 Goals

Happy new year! Whether you’re taking this extra day to relax and recharge before you start off 2024 or if you’re busy today getting ahead, I hope this year brings you plenty of wonderful things because we’re all due for a good year.

The end of 2023 just threw so much at me, I’m almost glad that I had the last three months to really just take a beat and focus on myself. I started going on walks in the mornings, I got to experiment with a new pen name, I pulled off a 10,000 word day in November, and managed to land a new job that starts next week.

And that means I’m hitting the ground running hard this year. This is my first full year of my thirties and so many people I know keep telling me that the thirties are better than the twenties, and man I hope that’s true.

I’ve started realizing that over the past few years, so many of my goals either spill over or are the same, but this year I’m going to not only focus on goals, but build habits and track things – like tracking my mood and the weather.

I’m just ready to embrace this new year and everything that comes with it.

I did change my process for goal setting and categorizing those goals this year, starting with an annual assessment of how I felt in going into 2024 and yikes, it’s rough.

I built out eight categories.

  1. Relationships
  2. Career (like my day job)
  3. Writing for Laura Teagan
  4. My other pen name
  5. Reading
  6. Finances
  7. Physical Health
  8. Mental Health

So, in order to honor these different categories, I built different goals about each of them and if I manage to get all of these done, I will truly be impressed with myself.

My relationship goals

Obviously, I’m in a long term relationship, so this references my romantic relationship but also to other relationships, like with family and friends. I have two goals involving this one.

  • Plan one date night a month
  • plan a friend’s night out once every two months

My financial goals

  • start a new 401k or an IRA since I’m starting a new job
  • save $4,000 by the end of the year
  • pay off a credit card I no longer use
  • build out some sinking funds

Career goals

  • Continue to network in hopes of eventually landing a copywriting job
  • hit 100% at my new job every month
  • build a website for copywriting, like a portfolio website

Mental health goals

  • Start therapy again
  • Journal 300 times this year
  • track daily stats
  • aim for an average of a daily score of 75 (out of 100)

Physical health goals

  • lose weight
  • start lifting weights
  • Get a new standing desk and a walking pad for my office
  • Donate blood 5 times
  • Do three stints of 30 days with no alcohol throughout the year
  • Get a new standing desk and a walking pad for my office
  • Donate blood 5 times
  • Do three stints of 30 days with no alcohol throughout the year

Reading goals

  • Read 100 books
  • Read 30 books that you already own
  • Read 4 books about writing craft

My publishing goals

  • Write and edit the second draft of The Girl in the Hay Bale
  • Possibly publish it in Q3 or Q4?
  • work on a secret project that will carry into 2025
  • Grow my Instagram following to either 1,000/2,000/5,000 followers (good, better, best)
  • Grow my Patreon following (10/25/50)
  • Grow email list (50/100/200)

I do also have goals for my other pen name, but I’m going to keep those separate from here. Even if I ignore those, I still have plenty of things I’m tacking this year. I just want to make sure I stay at it. I hope and pray and all the other things that 2024 turns out to be everything I need and want, and I hopefully stay focused and check in with these to make this the best year yet.
