5 Reasons You Need to Start Side-Hustling in College
Side-hustling is the idea of running a business part-time (often online) on top of doing something else full-time (usually a job, but I’m a full-time student – for now). Side-hustling is often full of passion projects, and things that we all wish we could do full time. Side-hustling in college can be a great thing to do, so today I’m sharing 5 reasons you need to start side-hustling in college.
For instance, while I’m a full-time student, I have two side hustles, and I hope to make them both full time hustles some day.
My books and my blogs. I make money off of both of these, and today, I’m going to talk about 5 reasons you need to start side-hustling in college.
1. Creative Thinking is Good For You
Especially now when we all live in our cell phones, side-hustling gives us the opportunity to use that for something different. Creative thinking can be creating content, brainstorming ideas, engaging with others on social media, etc. Creative thinking is a brain workout, but that makes your brain smarter and sharper. Personally, I’ve found that the creative processes in blogging and noveling help me with my depression.
2. You’ll Find a Pretty Awesome Community
Blogging and the writing world are full of people with an awesome entrepreneurial spirit. People who help one another, share ideas, and give great advice. Who wouldn’t want an awesome group of friends like that?
3. You’re Always Learning
I’m a firm believer that you never truly stop learning, even after you graduate. Side-hustling gives you the opportunity to learn about things you’re interested in. Compared to school where you have to memorize facts and theories, learning in the real world is highly rewarding and really enjoyable when you find new things you’re passionate to learn about. And if you’re going to spend the rest of your life learning, might as well find things you’re interested in, right?
While you’re in college, you’ll also find spots where your side hustle and your education overlap. This has happened several times for me this semester.
4. Experience
One of the hardest things about graduating is finding a job. As an entry-level job searcher, a lot of times I hear things like “you need experience.” While the classes I’ve taken this semester have definitely helped, my blogging has also given me a lot of experience. How many college students get to say they’ve done social media campaigns for Walmart?
5. Money
This one is a big more superficial, but money you make from side-hustling can be really great. Between now and January, I’ll be unemployed for about a month before I start getting regular paychecks again, but because of my blogging, I’ll have money to pay for my bills. Side-hustling money has paid my rent a few times this year, and that is a really awesome feeling.
Maybe I’m an old soul in a 22 year-old’s body, but I don’t think you can start too early. Whether it’s blogging a lot, or releasing a novel at 21, I’ve never let time or age stop me from getting started at my career. Side-hustling has a lot of benefits, more than just the five I’ve listed, but I think side-hustling in college is a great way to start.
