For the Love of Words: November 2019
Let’s talk about NaNoWriMo – it happens every year and almost every year I fail. In fact, when it came to November 30th, Facebook memories reminded me that the last time I won NaNoWriMo was in 2016. And I won in 2016 because I lost my job a third of the way into the month.
This year, however, was by far the worst attempt yet – but that’s okay because it was still valuable. My book, Justice and Lies, was the first time I had entered that world and worked with those characters in almost two years. NaNoWriMo was more an exercise in getting back into the world than it was to actually finish a novel or to have a story that I could publish.
2019 has been an odd year for me as I’ve suddenly found myself becoming an actual adult (yay adulting). A new car (talk about a big girl purchase), a new job that actually challenges me and I get paid to beat the challenges, new friends that I never anticipated and a boyfriend. In January, I’ll move into my own place where it’s all mine.
With all these great “Adulting” milestones, I’ve found my writing time to be harder to fight for. I come home a little more tired from the day, there are more chores to do at night, and the weekends are spent with friends and family. I suspect for December and January, as I prepare to move and do so, there’ll be less and less writing.
I’m also hoping that by the time February comes around, I’ll have that quiet space where I can focus just on writing. While I’m pretty much done with actual writing in 2019, I’m really excited for 2020.
