  1. Why no 2nd person? Just personal preference? The novel I’m working on right now is in 2nd person and I have to say I’m really enjoying writing it that way. It’s not used often, but it really packs a punch when used correctly. The author is telling the reader exactly how we want them to feel – it’s almost like hypnosis! 🙂

    1. Hi Athena,
I didn’t really talk about second person just because it’s so rare. It’s also harder than 1st and 3rd, but if you’re writing a novel in 2nd person, I totally admire you for that!

  2. I would say try each voice out before you decide for sure on a POV. I was once writing a novel in third person, when the antagonist decided to take over the story in his first person point of view. I’ve also been working on a story in first person for a while, but I’ve considered changing it to third because the MC spends so much time in his brain that he forgets to tell the story. The funny thing is, this story was originally in third, but the MC insisted on first.

Maybe I should grow a spine and stand up to my characters…I don’t know. 🙂 I guess what I’m trying to say is choose the voice that moves the story along better than any other voice — and don’t use first person if your MC is going to SIT IN HIS ROOM ALL DAY. (Sorry, I had a yelling at a fictional character moment.)

    Nice article. 🙂

    1. Oh yes, don’t use first person to do that! Don’t worry, I’ve caught my characters do that once or twice before, too.
