  1. I’ve been planning to use a pen name for a long time because there’s already an author out there with the same name as me, and she writes stuff that’s very…erm, different than what I write. 😛 Hadn’t thought about preparing social media accounts for the pen name, though. I’ve just claimed my pen name’s Twitter account–hopefully I’ll actually need it some day!

  2. I created my pen name from my second name, Louise and my husbands second name, Charles. I wanted to separate my writing from my career at the time as well as acknowledge the support I get from Simon …

    1. I was waffling between wanting to use my married name or my family name. I thought a real pen name would be cool but when I saw my dad was so proud to see T.F.Hoffmann on the page I decided to stay with it. What ultimately decided me however was that my books will (hopefully) sit on the book shelves close to one of the authors who inspired me to write better and whose books are similar to mine. Robin Hobb. So it was a marketing decision really.

  3. I’m thinking of using a pen name because 1. my name is Tiffany T… Really? Tiffany sounds fine if I’m your waitress, or even your child’s teacher, but it does not sound literary. Put a T last name behind it, and it already sounds like a pen name. 2. The things I need to finish writing are pretty spiritual in nature, and thus kind of controversial, even among people who shouldn’t find them that problematic. (I’m somewhere in the Charismatic.Pentecostal zone, and I don’t expect everyone in that zone to dig it, much less every denomination… What happens if I want to work at a christian school without parents being afraid I’ll send their kids off into experiential heresy?) I was thinking of just going with T.R. Thomas, but am going to consider other options.

    1. That sounds incredibly negative… but I’ve really found that terms I use commonly are huge put-offs to people with different philosophies, even when it’s mostly a matter of semantics…. And also, I really enjoyed this piece! Good thoughts! Loved that you included some resources that sound great!
